Carl Clements, or “54” as Mr. Lackey would say, was born in Dumas on March 20, 1980 to Molly
and Jerry Clements. All he ever wanted to be growing up was a Dumas Demon. He played
football all 4 years of HS, did powerlifting his Freshman year and wrestled his Sophomore
through Senior years. Carl was the first ever Freshman to play on the Dumas Varsity Football
team and in 1996 his team broke the 22 year playoff drought in Dumas. Carl had many
accolades and awards in his high school career which include:
2 time all district in football, 2 time all state honorable mention in football and 2 time unanimous
Amarillo Globe Super Team middle linebacker. He led the team in tackles his senior year and
was a 3 year captain. He was also a 3 time all state wrestler, 3 time academic all state wrestler,
was ranked 13th in the nation by Wrestling USA magazine his senior year, and was a 2 year
captain in wrestling as well. He was also recognized with the All Around Athlete and
Outstanding Wrestler awards his senior year.
Carl Graduated in 1998 and went to Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He played middle
linebacker on the Ranger football team for 2 years and contributed to the National
Championship title they earned in 1999. He married his high school sweetheart Angie
McSpadden in June of 2000 and transferred to WT to focus on getting his degree in Sports and
Exercise Science to become a coach. There were many coaches that paved the way and
inspired him to give back in the same way as they mentored and motivated him. Carl was able
to pour into, and make a difference in kids’ lives through his coaching in Hereford as the
assistant football and wrestling coach for 2 years, in Leander as the head wrestling coach and
assistant football coach for 4 years, and finally as the Dumas head wrestling coach and
assistant football coach for 3 years, before taking on the administrative role. He began that
calling in 2013 at NPOC. He was the head principal there for 7 years and was awarded TASSP
Region 16 Outstanding Principal of the year in 2020. He is currently the Dumas high school
head principal and this marks his 5th year in this role. Having Kennedy and Sophie, his 2
beautiful daughters, was a big motivation in getting back to Dumas to be able to raise them as
Dumas Demons also! One of his proudest achievements has been being a dad to these girls. It
also makes Carl extremely proud to hear from ex-athletes and students who are now coaching
or giving back and making a difference in some way! Carl makes a positive impact on our
community daily by having high standards for those around him and wanting each and every
student and person at DHS to live up to his/her full potential, even when they don’t see it in
themselves. Those who are lucky enough to know him well, know they are better for being in his
presence or under his leadership. He is a very intense and motivating person who always
strives for greatness in everything he does. Carl was voted Mr. DHS in High School and that still
applies today, he truly embodies demon pride! He cares for this school like no other! Carl credits
God for his life and path and works daily and diligently to answer His callings. In his spare time,
Carl loves going to the mountains, spending time with his family, watching his girls and all DHS
students in their activities, and competing in Jiu Jitsu.
Carl’s High School Head Football Coach Brent McCallie says:
“Carl is a true leader. He played a big part in getting the program turned around in 96 and 97.
He was a beast on the field and a gentleman off. He was a leader in the school building, in the
field house, and on the field! I knew he was going to be successful at whatever he did in life!!”
Coach Rogers adds:
“When I was asked to write down a few words about Carl for his induction into the Dumas Wall
of honor, my mind went immediately back to October 28, 1994, Pampa, Texas. That was Carl’s
official first night as a starting varsity football player. Carl was a freshman!
Carl had all those qualities of a promising young player: good size and quickness, knack for the
ball and a GREAT hitter. That year was my only year to get to be a part of Carl’s high school
career. Coach John Civis described Carl as “ a complete student of the game”,understanding
Opponents and executing defenses.
What I remember was Carl standing next to me that night in Pampa, blood running from a
busted lip and nose, face mask severely bent and a not so good outcome of the game reflected
on the scoreboard. I told him he played hard, the sun was going to come up in the morning and
everything was going to be ok! And as always with Carl, I got that staring eye contact, a nod of
the head and confident grin!
Congratulations, Carl. Coach Rogers”
