Bill Spann

Honored in 2011
Football Coach

In 1961, Bill Spann was part of a coaching team that led the Dumas Demons to a State 3A Championship.  In 1962, he found himself the head coach of a team of young players with big shoes to fill.  The questions about his ability to bring those inexperienced players along to fill big shoes swarmed as the season grew near.  Those questions were quickly laid to rest however as Coach Spann began the legacy that would become “The Decade of the Demons.”  Bill Spann was “Old School” when “Old School” was going out of style.  Spann set high standards for his athletes.  As the players worked to meet those expectations, they found the rigor that was expected from them in their athletic program changed who they were as people. He was not only concerned about molding a program – he molded youngsters into good people.  That, as much as his record at DHS, is his real legacy.
